The Magistrates exercise jurisdiction over only the old Royalty and with little or no patronage except the appointing of the town Officers, and teachers of the burgh school. Kirkcudbright unites with Dumfries, Annan, Sanquhar & Lochmaben in sending a member to parliament constituency about -- (A weekly market on Friday, and annual fairs are held in the last Friday of April & September, & on the Friday preceding Castle Douglas Mid summer fair) population at the most recent census 3526 including the parish. Kirkcudbright is rich in historical events. Fergus Lord of Galloway whose Palace stood on an Island in Loch Fergus near the burgh, and the last in the Male line of these ancient Princes of Galloway was Allan who dies in all probability, in the Castle, and was buried in Dundrennan Abbey. The patriot William Wallace took shipping at Kirkcudbright and sailed to France with McLellan of Bombie Ancestor of the noble family of Kirkcudbright, and about 50 faithful adherents. Edward I, King of England took up his abode in the original Castle of Kirkcudbright (now called Castle dykes) and remaind with his Queen & court ten days. Edward Bruce having subdued Galloway received from his Royal brother the Lordship of Galloway with the Castle of Kirkcudbright and all Baliol forfeited estates. it also afforded shelter for about 2 years to Henry VI of England & his Queen. James IV visited it divers times. And James VI appears to have been in it when in pursuit of Lord Maxwell, As the Burgh is in possession of a Small Silver Gun which according to tradition, was presented to the Magistrates during his visit, that the Burgers might occasionally shoot for it & by this means improve in the use of fire Arms, it has been shot for only 3 times in the memory of the oldest persons now living. 1st in 1781 2nd on the 22nd of April 1830 & 3 on the 28th June 1838 the day of the Queen's Coronation. A little west of the town is the site of the ancient Castle of Kirkcudbright situated upon a Mound (which is surrounded by a fosse which probably the tide flowed round it in former times)called Castle Dykes, and at the termination of High St. and Castle St. stands the ruins of Kirkcudbright Castle (See description of both these Castles in adjoining sheets) Kirkcudbright anciently was a fortified town Some traces of the fortification are still to be seen, the town is said to have had two Gates, but the site of only one can now be obtained.
