This name applies to an ovaloid? piece of land about 30 chains long and 8 chains broad, which until a recent period was covered with water forming a beautiful loch, said to have been of artificial origin and formed to surround and thus to strengthen the position of Fergus Lord of Galloway which stood on palace Island when the loch existed it surrounded two Islands which still bear the names of Palace [Isle] and Stable Isle.
