050 A portion of High Street where the fortifications crossed And at which place the principal gate is Said to have been There is Still Two Stones One on each Side of the Street each Stone perforated with a hole in which hole the lower pivots of the gate are said to have turned. From appearances it would appear they were folding gates Surmounted by an arch On the arch was the Round Stone Balls One of these Balls were taken away to a Considerable distance but was afterwards at the brought back and the whole three are now placed over an archway at the Entrance to Saint Cuthberts Graveyard According to tradition there was another gate but every enquiry has been made and the place it occupied cannot be ascertained
