050 | This name applies to a castle which formerly stood in Loch Fergus (formerly an artificial loch but now drained) there is very little track of the Castle to be seen now except here and there a few traces of the foundation It was the strong fortress of the ancient Lords of Galloway and is said to have been first founded by Fergus McDowall one of those princes, from whom it derived its name. There were two fortified islands in the lake one of which stable Isle is still to be seen. It is situated on the farm of Loch Fergus |
