The building stands on the site of the Grey friars church pertaining to a convent of the same order, which was granted in 1564 by Mary Queen of Scots to the Magistrates of the burgh, for a protestant church it having been petitioned form by the General Assembly. It was used as a church until 1730 when it was supplanted by another which was occupied as the Ph [Parish] Church up to 1830. The aisle only of the latter is left which is used as a school, a great part of it was taken away for the erection of the present edifice. The Aisle is property of the Earl of Selkirk who purchased it from the Burgh to prevent its being pulled down.
