A Small river having two headwaters one of which issuing from Loch Fleet called the Little "Water of Fleet", and the other taking its rise at the base of Cairnsmore, is called the Meikle Water of Fleet, both these rivers runs nearly in a Southerly direction for a distance of about 7 or 8 Miles and unites near a place called Castramont, thence it is called the "Water of Fleet" and runs thro' a picturesque valley well studded with plantations houses &c., and runs into Wigtown Bay about 3 Miles below the town of Gatehouse, It is navigable for vessels of 200 tons burthen nearly as far up as Gatehouse.

It is of a square form and seems to be Artificially constructed, surrounded on all sides but the North by a fosse and Rampart - and on the North by a small abrupt declevity of about 60 feet from top to bottom, No traditional or historical account of it can be got respecting it in its locality, Capn [Captain] Denniston of Creetown, a learned Antiquarian says that this Camp is the work of the Romans, many other intelligent persons in the locality are of the same opinion.

A Small deep pool in the Water of Fleet, which has [its] name from a person called Maxwell (Laird of Stroquhan in Dumfriesshire) who was in 1699 drowned here, under the following Circumstances, he had been on a Visit to a Gentleman called Brown a resident in Bushy Bield near Anwoth, for whose [daughter] Jane Brown, Maxwell was said to entertain an Attachment, but being unsucessful in his address to the young Lady, & On the [?] Same day, it is said he left Bushy Bield [abruptly] & was drowned in the Water of Fleet in the pool which has been ever since called Stroquhan's Pool, in Commemoration of the Mournful Accident.
