It adjoins the burial aisle of the Douglases, which is wholly covered with ivy and shaded by a few good specimens of the Yew.__ The church which belonged to the diocese of Brechin, is rated in the ancient taxatis at £20 Scots. A chapel situated at Drumlithie, was dependent upon the kirk of Glenbervy, the patronage of both of which livings went along with the estates. (a)
See Page 83 Douglas Aisle See Name Sheet Attached. Although none of the monuments in the kirk yard of Glenbervy has any pretension to beauty of design, few rural grave yards contain so many memorials of the ancestors of those who have rendered themsleves famous in the annals of their country. The most interesting to the historians and antiquary are those within the Douglas Aisle __the one a mural tablet and the other chest shaped. __ The first is a renewed monument of date 1680 with some curious mortuary armaments, and the armorial bearings of Hassa, Olifant, Melville, Auchleck, and Douglas. The inscription, which in old contracted Latin, narrates the valourous actions, and the matrimonial alliances, of the lairds, and ladies of Glenbervy, from the remote period of A.D. 730. __ Although little reliance need be placed on this sculputered narrative which is one of the most singular of its kind extant (its perpetuation of the sobriquet of the fifth Earl of Angus, he being there designed 'Bell the Cat,' being perhaps not least curious of its features,) the lands of Glenbervy were in possession of a baron in the twelfth century, whose surname probably was Melville, it being a common name in the district at that period.
