The Etymology of the name is sufficiently obvious, Beu a Hill and holme a piece of low lying level ground.
This derivative suggests the Idea of a diversified surface of hill and dales and this is not undescriptive of the general aspect of the Parish.
The length and breadth of the parish are nearly equal, as it extends about three miles from North to South, and the same distance from East to West:
Consequently it may contain about nine square miles. It is bounded on the Southwest by the parish of St Cyrus; on the Northwest by that of GarvocK;

Revd. [Reverend] Sir,
As there appears
to be some doubt regarding
the correct orthography of
your parish name, whether
it should be written with
or without the final "e", I
am constrained to request
your valuable assistance
in enabling me to arrive
at the correct mode of
spelling, and that which
you would recommend
to be written upon the
Ordnance plans of Scotland.
An early reply
upon the opposite margin
will greatly oblige
Yr. [Your] Most Obedt. Servt. [Obedient Servant]
Thomas Porteous Sergr. R E [Sergeant Royal Engineers]
pro Captn. [Captain] Courtney RE [Royal Engineers]
The Manse Benholm
17th Sept. [September] 1863.
Sir,
It has always seemed to
me preferable to spell the name
of this Parish without the final "e" &
I have uniformly done so for the follow
ing reasons:- 1st The last syllable
of the name is the Saxon word
"holm,"- meaning a flat piece of land,
which indeed was once . according to
the old fashioned mode, spelt "holme,"
but is now always by recognized modern
practice, spelt "holm" in recently ap
proved Dictionaries &c. 2nd: I find
that the names of all other places
in Scotland so ending, are uniformly
written without the final "e." Ex:
gr [Example grammar]:- Bartonholm, Denholm, Green
holm, Kirkholm, Longholm, Leithholm,
Smailholm, Springholm, Twynholm
Getholm.
It may be accounted by some more
venerable or aristocratic to spell
Benholm with the final "e," just as some
persons named Brown or Green
spell their names, Browne or Greene,
but predominant use is against
such an exceptional mode now of
spelling the name of this Parish.
I am, Sir
Your very obedt. Servt. [obedient Servant]

It had obviously been at one period used as a place of worship by the Roman Catholic's as it was furnished with a font for holy water with an incense alter and with a niche or Small press in the wall which is conjectured to have been the receptacle of Sacred relics."(New Stat. Benholm Parish
The Church [Note] The church which stands nearly in the centre and most agreeable part of the parish, is an old irregular Gothic building. On the East, a part is raived higher than the rest, which formerly served for the choir, and still retains the name, though it has long been used as a burying place.
The remains of a font are still to be seen at one of the church doors, and other relics of Superstition, which evidently shew that the whole has been built before the Reformation." (Old Statistical Account Vol.[Old Statistical Account Volume] 15. P [Page] 224)
"The kirk was in the diocese of St Andrews, and during the time of Lundie (of Benholm Castle) the Monks of Arbroath had a gift of a Chalder of victual furth of these lands . This occurred in 1398." (Land of the Lindsays P. [Page] 320) |

The Royal judge, either wearied with the complainaners, or enraged at the offender Said, probably in a peevish humour, "I wish that Sheriff was Sodden and Supped in brose." Such was the Savage barbarity of the times, that the Barons, who were little accustomed to the formalities of a trial, laid hold of these words and put them literally in execution. The place where the deed was perpetrated, lies at the bottom of the hills on the side next to Garvoch, is not unlike the cavity of a kiln for drying corn, and still retains the name of the 'Sheriff's Kettle'."(See name sheet of Garvoch Ph [Parish])(Old. Stat. Acct. Vol. [Statistical Account Volume] 11 P [Page] 239) The above information has been obtained since the Plans of Garvoch Ph. [Parish] were forwarded. All that remains of the "Cairn," is the base. B. Render Corp. R.E. [Corporal Royal Engineers] 29/9/63 |

Stone Coffin found here [Note] I have made every possible enquiry relative to the above extract but can not meet with any person who can give any information on the Subject. About 20 years ago Mr Smith found at the place as marked on here, a Stone Coffin about 3 feet below the Surface. It was full of water, and there were no bones, nor any appearance of human remains, this may be accounted for by the wet nature of the Soil which would hasten decomposition. B. Render Corp. R.E. It is more than a foot thick, measures eight feet along the ground, and rises nearly six above its surface, in an inclined direction towards the north.
As there is no place in the neighbourhood except one at the south corner of the parish, close by the shore, where stones of the same quality are found, it appears to have been brought from there, not without considerable difficulty the intervening space being a pretty steep assent of more than a mile. It would seem therefore to have been erected for some useful purpose, perhaps with a view to perpetuate some memorable event. Tradition says, a battle was fought near the place and the number of the flint heads of arrows, found on the side of the hill where it stands affords some reason to credit this repost. Between this and the coast a great quantity of human bones has been dug up, in the course of improving the land, for nearly the space of a mile along the rising ground above Johnshaven. being occupied by dead bodies on any other supposition then that of an engagement. At the same time it seems doubtful whether such a degree of attention would be bestowed in burying all the dead slain on the field of battle unless we consider it as a mark of regard from the survivors, to those who had probably fallen in the defence of their country. There were no arms in any of those graves, but one or two have been found in Stone Coffins of about four feet long at a place called Moat Hill not far from the mansion house of Benholm." (Old Stat Act Vol. [Statistical Account Volume] 15. P. [Page] 238)
"On the farm of Boghead a quantity of human bones have been dug up, the coffins containing which were formed of unknown stones. It is remarkable that these remains should have been found not only in one spot, but scattered over a space of nearly a mile in length. A number of flint arrow heads were found in the same vicinity, and tradition vaguely speaks of a battle fought here." (New Stat Act P. [Statistical Account Page] 58)
The "Cloch Hill", and "The Cloch Stone", are both well known names. The latter is tautology as "Cloch" in the Gaelic language signifies a stone, and stone has evidently been affixed by the people not knowing the meaning of the word Cloch. This Stone is about 7 feet broad, 1 foot thick, and stands about 5 ft [feet] 10 in [inches] above the general surface of the ground. There is no record of its erection, but it has evidently been placed to record some remarkable event, similar to the "Stone of Morphis in St Cyrus Ph. [Parish] and the "Coast Stone" in Fordoun Ph. [Parish]. Or what is very probable it may have been placed as a Land Mark by some of early mariners. H. Scott Esqr States he has heard it said that those stones were erected by the Romans on their march to the North, and used by them a signal or guide marks. I think it may be classed among the "Standing Stones," found scattered over Scotland and England. There is no circle surrounding this stone, but a large boulder is standing at each end of it. The Stone is on the summit of the hill and can be seen for a considerable distance. (B. Render Corp. RE. [Corporal Royal Engineers] 30/9/63) |

It is well known as The Floors Stone, and Mr Scott the proprietor of the ground considers it to be of the same antiquity and origin as The Cloch. There is no mention of this Stone in any of the Parochial documents, but it is evidently one of those stones known to Antiquarians as Standing Stones. The Floors stands about 4 Feet above the surface of the ground and inclines to the East, it is about 15 inches by 18 in thickness. B. Render Corp R.E. [Corporal Royal Engineers] 2/11/63 |

"This at one time had been a place of considerable strength the date of its foundation is unknown It is a high and massive building of Sand Stone in a State of complete preservation It seems at one time to have stood on a peninsula formed by a Stream on the East and South Sides and by a deep trench or moat on the West a passage was formed over the moat by the late proprietor G. R. Scott Esqr. in opening a new approach to the mansion house." It is now the property and occasional residence of the Hon. [Honourable] Lord Cranstoun. This place is best known as "Tower of Benholm." |

Belnholm Parish
Tower of Benholm [Note] Among the few antiquities of this Parish may be mentioned a Square Tower, which was the ancient residence
of the family of Benholme, and is still kept in repair though not inhabited, from its peninsular situation,
thickness of wall and battlements on the roof, this building seems to have been originally intended for a place
of Strength, and before the use of artillery, was probably not ill calculated to resist the Sudden attack of an enemy.
"When this stronghold was built is uncertain,"-(Old Stat. Acct.Vol [Statistical Account Volume] 15 P. [Page] 238)
"The Tower, or old manor house of Benholm which was probably built by Lord Altrie (1587.) is much
in the style of Auchinleck and Inverquharity, is about 80 feet high and the walls about 5 1/2 feet thick the
battlement is broad and massive, with turrets at each corner, overtopt bt a pend house.- The Lands of
Benholm were anciently held by a family who designed themselves de Benham, from at least the be-
ginning of the thirteenth century till towards the close of the fourteenth. It is certain that Sir John
Lindsay of Woodwray and Balinscho, held the estate for several years subsequently until 1587 when he resigned
it in favor of Robert, Lord Altrie." (Land of the Lindsays P. [Page] 320) |
