The parish of Kirkhill consists of two united parishes, called Wardlaw and Farnua. Wardlaw is the name of the hill on which the church was built, and is a conufition of the Gaelic Bar-tla, that is, "Kindly Summit." Farnua or Fearnaie, as it is called in Gaelic, is probably derived from the word fearn, dignifying "allar", because the parish did and still does abound with allar trees. The name of the united parishes in Gaelic is "Cnoc Mhòir", or "Mary's Hill." In the neighbourhood, it is called, by way of eminence, the Hill, hence the English translation of it "Kirkhill" New Statistical Account.
The parish of Kirkhill is in the Presbytery of Inverness, Synod of Moray. It is bounded on the North by the Beauly Firth, on the east and south east by the parish of Inverness and Bona and on the west and south west by the parishes of Kilmorack, Kiltarlity and Convinth. There are no detached portions of the parish of Kirkhill, and there are no detached portions of any other parish situated within it. |

Hi Kyle I have added some missing words to the previous couple of pages, but have put them in square brackets [ ] until we get some confirmation.
If you are not sure of a word or there is one missing it is best to put [ ] , it is then easier to find on the page and a searcher can see that there is supposed to be another word there.
Please be careful of capitalisation in odd places and transcribe as seen, other than that your transcriptions are fine. Kate |
