From Gazetteer of Scotland
" An ancient stronghold of the Mac.Donells on the banks of Loch Oich, near the mouth of the Garry, 7½ Miles from Fort Augustus. It consists of an oblong square of five stories, of which the walls are now standing, the whole having been sacked and burnt after the rebellion of 1745"
There is no very definite history of Invergarry Castle in existence, but it seems to have been built in or about 1680 by the then chief of Glengarry on conclusion – by intermarriage – of the feud between Lochiel & Glengarry. It was destroyed by the Duke of Cumberland in 1746 after the battle of Culloden. In Dr. [Doctor] Burt's letters mention is made of it. It was at one time occupied by a person called Rawlinson who was sent to smelt iron ore ( I suppose owing to the cheapness [continued page 52] |

cheapness of the timber) in the neighbourhood. He complained to the Lord Advocate of the day of the hostility of the Highlanders towards him,– that in fact his life had been threatened by them,– & asked for protection from the Government. This Rawlinson is said to have been the first person to introduce the Kilt, which was used as the most comfortable or convenient dress for the Iron Smelters. The walls are five feet thick. [Signed] James Archbold Sapper R.E. [Royal Engineers]
N.B. [Note Well] This Castle is still the property of the Mac.Donells it was retained by them for the purpose of giving still the right of the family title viz [that is to say]– Glengarry. |
