This is an Island in the Centre of Loch Moy, on which the ancient Residence of the head of the MacKintoshe's [sic] was erected the ruins of which at present exist. It was deserted by the Chiefs of the MacKintoshes about 1660- and since then has ceased to be a residence of the family. |

The Strath is all of it well cultivated and contains a large number of Shooting Lodges, it is very narrow in the upper districts until we reach the Neighbourhood of Tomatin; where it increases to about threee miles in Width. At Dalmagarry one branch of it extends North Westward on both sides of the Inverness and Perth road to the boundary between the Parishes of Moy and Dalarossie and Daviot & Dunlichity, taking in Moy Hall and Loch Moy. The other branch extends Northward along the River Findhorn to the boundary between the Counties of Inverness abd Nairn. It is about sixteen miles in length, varying in width from about half a mile to three miles. It belongs to various Proprietors, and for a Highland district is thickly populated. |

A river which rises in the Monadhliath Mountains. It takes the name of Findhorn from the junction of two smaller rivers named Abhainn Crè Clach and River Eskin, from this junction it runs between steep hills until it reaches the head of Strath Dearn through which it passes, here the country gradually assumes a milder aspect , the glen becoming wider with a strip of Cultivation on each of the river banks and dotted with many farmsteadings and Shooting lodges. After leaving Strath Dearn it enters the County of Nairn through which it passes in a northerly direction entering the County of Elgin near the village of Relugas, it passes through Elgin and falls into the Moray Firth at the village of Findhorn near Forres after a course of about forty five miles. Its course throughout its entire route is rapid and turbulent, and from the nature of the Country it drains; its floods are sudden and heavy. |

This name applies to the Old road from Inverness to Perth made under the direction of General Wade. It exists in its entirety from Inverness until it joins the County road at the South east end of Loch Moy, and is frequently used by travellers as a bridle and foot road, but is too much broken up in many places for Carriages. From the point at Loch Moy the old road can only be traced by detached pieces, sometimes running alongside the New road, in some places the new road has been laid on it, while in many places the track is entirely defaced either by cultivation or wood. |

Rout of Moy, here A.D. 1746/ |
The MacKintosh, Moy Hall, Co. [County] Inverness
C. F. MacKintosh Commissioner for the Mackintosh, 16 Union St. Inverness. |
020 |
The Rout of Moy occurred on 16th March 1746/ a month before the Battle of Culloden near General Wade's Military Road. and between Creag Bane and Creag an Eòin. It appears that upon the above date Lord London with the King's Army was at Inverness, when being informed that Prince Charles Stuart was to sleep that night at Moy, he left Inverness with 1500 men with the intention of Capturing the Prince, and thereby to put an end to the Rebellion - The Mackintosh's wife having received notice that the King's Army was advancing on Moy Hall - she consulted with Donald Fraser, Blacksmith at Moybeg, a clever and active man, he agreed with five other men whom she named, to reconnoitre the royal army along the high road to Inverness.
It was dusk in the evening when they reached the hass at the hill Creag an Eòin. Here there was a quantity of fuel and divots set up to dry. Donald and his men, in order to watch the motions of the ensuing placed themselves a few hundred yards asunder, amongst these heaps; soon after they perceived London's troop coming forwards and when the army came within hearing a command was passed by Donald, and then from man to man in a load voice along a distance of a quarter of a mile.
Lord London, suspecting in the twilight that the heaps above which were the Highland army was instantly retreated and did not cease retreating until he arrive in Sutherlandshire upwards 70 miles he having crossed 3 arms of the sea.
this affair was humoursly called the 'Rout of Moy'
