A parish on the south-east verge of Forfarshire. bounded on the north by Carmyllie, on the north-east and east by Arbirlot and a detached portion of St Vigeans on the south east by the German ocean on the south-west by Barry and on the west by Monikie. Its figure nearly resembles the small segment of a flat ring the convex side turned to the south west and it measures nearly 5 miles in length from north to south east about two miles in mean breadth and is supposed to be about 5,400 acres in area. The Coast 2¼ miles in extent is flat and very rocky with a pebbly beach which occasionally affords some gems. The interior is in general flat but rises towards the north. The soil toward the Coast is sandy, in the central district it is clay on loam and toward the north is moorish. Limestone but of an inferior quality and not in plenty exists and sandstone both of an excellent sort for building and of the slaty kind which yields the Arbroath paving stone abounds and is worked. This parish is in the presbytery of Arbroath and Synod of Angus & Mearns

OS1/14/76/7 Supposed Site of BATTLE Between the English and Scots (14th Century) [nr Crombie Mill] Supposed Site of Battle Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Cæser Ph. [Parish] Minister Letter of the Late Revd. [Reverend] Dr. [Doctor] Trail Hollinsheds Chronicles Vol [Volume] 2 P. [Page] 13 045 [Situation] In the north of the parish of Panbride. I could get no information respecting the actual site of this battle, but the position marked on trace, the Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Cæser States to be very likely, so far as is now known, to be the site of battle. Mr. Caeser says, in Some old histories, (works of Hector Boethius for instance), this battle is described as having taken place north of the woods at Panmure; and a letter in his possession, written by the late Revd. [Reverend] Dr. [Doctor] Trail, mentions the ground between Panmure woods and Crombie Mill as being likely to be the place where the battle in question was fought. I have made enquiry in the neighbourhood, and could not find one person who had ever heard about this battle; nor could I glean any information respecting the finding of bones, pieces of armour or weapons, stone coffins &c. There are no remains of military defences, nor marks of any having ever been on the ground

OS1/14/76/7A [Page] 7a Mr. Smith, writer, Arbroath, is not acquainted with the ground about Crombie Mill, but from what he has read respecting this battle, he supposes it to have taken place along the road (or close to it) which runs through Monikie & Carmyllie. The position marked on trace would seem to agree with this supposition - For Mr. Jervise's opinion, see correspondence in office. See also the extracts forwarded - none of which differ from Mr. Cæser, but they fail in particularizing the exact locality. If Mr. Cæser is written to he will give his reasons for fixing the position marked [Signed] J Keely 2d Cor:R.E. [Second Corporal Royal Engineers]
OS1/14/76/7B [Page] 7B Abercromby in his history of Scotland mentions that about the year 1338 while David II was in France and Sir Andrew Murray guardian of Scotland. a bloody battle was fought at Panmure with a party of the forces of Edward III in which 4000 of the English were let upon the Spot and among the rest Lord Henry Mountfort who seems to have been their general. The Guardian Sir. a. Murray commanded the Scots in person. He with the Earls of March & Fife had been lying in the Forest of Platane in Angus (of which the author declares his ignorance) and from that marched with his forces to Panmure where the battle ensued. It is represented as a victory of considerable consequence as it led to the reduction of the Castles of Leuchars, St Andrews, Falkland- and all others in Angus & Fife (exept that of Cupar) in favor of David's party. The spot on which this battle was fought is understood to be north of Panmure - near Crombiemill [continued on page 7C]

OS1/14/76/7D [Page] 7D Hollinshed's Chronicles VOL [VOLUME] 2 = Page 13. (printed in Arbroath) At the time of the war between David II and Edward III is the following passage - "At length this Andrew Murray assembling a great power with support of them of Murray, Marr, & Breichen, fought with his enemies at Panmure, where he obtained the victory with huge slaughter of Englishmen and other of his adversaries. In this battle were slain Henrie Mountfort, who latelie before had been sent by King Edward into Scotland to support the Balliol, beside four thousand others, the most part gentlemen so that this overthrow was very displeasant to the King of England, having his side sore weakened thereby" According Hollinshed, this battle seems to have occured in 1337 or earlier, for after noticing various other occurences apparently subsequent to the battle of Panmure, and another conflict in the south of Scotland, he adds "(at which battel also was King Edward the Earl of Gloucester the Lords Persie & Neul being in the year 1337 as saith scala chron [chronica])" And again, page 14, he adds "not long after Andrew Murray the governor of Scotland deceased to the great damage of the Commonwealth, and was buried in Rosmarkie in the year after the birth of our Saviour 1338"- [Signed] John Keely 2d. OS1/14/76/16A [Page] 16A Boath Sir - The farmer states with reference to the antiquities of this place "that an old Castle once stood at the place marked on trace, with a chapel attached, at which attended a chaplain from Arbroath Abbey. The Castle was erected by Sir Arthur Boathie, at what date he does not know. Two wells some years ago were close to the house, Called res- pectively the "East & West Chamberlain Wells" which are now closed up. They were named after Chamberlain Maule who lived in the Castle after Sir Arthur Boathie A portion of the old Castle walls is supposed to be part of the gable of one of the present Cottages" - The foregoing is the farmers statement. He appears to have got all his information from the Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Keenan, Dundee, to whom he refers as his authority & who, he says, knows all the particulars about this place. The Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Keenan, might be written to from the office. Mr. Caesar, Ph. [Parish] Minister of Panbride, is aware that a chapel stood in former days close to the present Cottages at Boath. He shewed me some old papers in which referince was made to the lands about Boath as Churchlands, and one of the papers, printed in Latin, entitled the "Feu Charter of the Churchlands of Panbride", states that in 1562 these lands were transferred or given in trust to William Lang by the Abbot of Arbroath Abbey. He also states that he has in his possession an old document which makes special mention of the Chapel; but when I was with him he could not find it, however, if he can do so, he will send me more information. Mr. Caesar is not aware of a Castle ever having been at this place - Mr Waugh knows nothing about either Chapel or Castle - nor Mr. Collier at Panlathy. Mr. Cæser, Panbride Old Charters of Church Lands (in Mr. Cæsers' possession) David Miller Esq: Writer, Arbroath. 051 [Situation] At the East side of Boath. The site of this Chapel was pointed out to me by the farmer, and is Situated close to the Boath farm house. There is no trace of the foundations visible, but many of the hewn stones of the ancient erection, such as window lintels &c., are built into some of the present outhouses: one gable of the latter seems to be wholly constructed of the ancient materials. What was left of the old building was removed about 40 years ago.

OS1/14/76/17A [Page] 17A Chapel at Boath, Panbride Parish By a Charter of Adam Bishop of Brechin in 1348, (Brechin Cart: [Cartulary] p [page] 10) it appears that Walter de Maule lord of Panmure granted the Lands of Carncorty (Cairncorthie ) to God and the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity at Brechin for the sus- tentation of two Chaplainries or altar- ages newly founded in that Church in honour o the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Holy Cross, and for the Cha- -pel of "Boith," in the diocese of Brechin. Among other provisions, it was appointed by this writing that the Vicar of Panbride was to minister at the Altars according to the missal of the Blessed Mary, and the Vicar of monzeky (Monikie) was to min- -ister according to the missal of the Blessed Marnock. By two subsequent confirmations of David II, in 1359, (Brechin Cart: [Cartulary] p [page] 13, 14) it is stated that, besides the Lands of Cairncorthie, given by Walter de Maule, the late Christina de Valon, Lady of Pan- mure, had granted to the Chapel of Boith the Lands of Botmer- nock [Both-marnoch ?] with the pertinents, in the tenement or holding of Panmure. And that the Abbot and Convent of Aber- brothock had granted two merks Sterling from their lands of Breckis (Brax,) toward the support of this Chapel. The [continued on page 17B]
OS1/14/76/17B [Page] 17B [continued from page 17A] The above reference to the missal of the Blessed Marnock, with the name of the Lands of Botmer- nok, which appear to have forme- ed the first endowment of the Chapel make it probable that the patron or tutelar Saint of the Chapel was St Marnoch; and that this was at that time the district Chapel of the Barony of Pan- mure, which continued, for a long period, to be a Separate poss- -ession from the Estate of Pan bride, in which the Parish Church was situated. The patronage of the chapel, with the tiends, the lands of Boath and Cairncorthie, and the mill, are speci- fied as part of the Panmure Estate in Retours of the years 1662, 1671 and 1686. Forwarded to me by David Millar Esq writer, Arbroath. He states the above to be extracts from the Cartularies of Arbroath & Brechin. [Signed] John Keely 2nd Corpl:RE [Second Corporal Royal Engineers]
OS1/14/76/17C [Page] 17C [left hand column] O.S. [Ordnance Survey] Muirdrum 17th. May 1858 Revd [Reverend] Sir Iwish to address you respecting two antiquities in Panbride parish about which I have been Speaking to you - First: the battle which you Suppose to have been fought between Crombie= = mill and the plantations north of Panmure Ho. [House],. What authority have you for supposing this battle to have been fought within the limits specified above? Do you take your authority from any old history?, and if so, can you give the name of the book, and an extract from it on which you base Your Statement. Will you also be good enough to give an extract from the letter in your possession, (received from a gentleman of your acquaintance), Specifying that the battle was fought in the neighbourhood alluded to above, - and the gentleman's name - Then I will have three authorities for for fixing the site of the battle = 1st.: the history, (I beg to state that the history, to become an authority with us, must allude to the neighbourhood in which the battle was fought = otherwise, it is an authority only for the fact of a battle having taken place, without at all assisting to fix the site); 2nd. yourself, [continued on page 17D] [right hand column answer to queries] Abercromby's History Vol: [Volume] III. and Hector Boece - the latter was Connected with the parish of Panbride - is generally supposed to have been born in it - His history is, I believe, in the Library at Panmure House Hector Boece or Boethius Abercromby's Hist: [History] Vol: [Volume] III

Names of objects, and sites of battles or antiquities, marked on our plans, must be substantiated by three authorities Second: - the chapel at Boath farm. You informed me that you had in yr. [your] possession an old document in which the chapel was specially alluded to. Will you be kind enough to give me an extract from the document, which may be quoted as an authority, and the name of the document, and also any remarks which you may think necessary to Supply yourself respecting the matter I remain Revd [Reverend] Sir, Yr. [Your] humble Servant John Keely 2d Corpl:RE [Second Corporal Royal Engineers] [right hand column answer to queries] The gentleman whose letter drew my attention to the battle was the late Revd. [Reverend] James Trail - minister of St Cyrus near Montrose. William Laing Vicar of Arbroath in 1562 fewed the lands which belonged to the chapel at Boath to Neil Laing Writer in Arbroath & his heirs and assignees These lands came into the possession of the Panmure family prior to 1623 - how or at what precise date is not known. But the description in old charters is "terras ecclesias de Panbride cum advocatione vicariae ecclesiae de Panbride et Capellaniae de Both" It is plain therefore that there was a chapel at Both.
