"The ancient name of this parish was Conghoillis, as appears from a Charter describing the lands of Boisack. The present name is Inverkeilor, from the Gaelic word Inver, implying the mouth of a stream, there being a rivulet named Keilor, which empties itself into the Sea, about a mile from the Village" Old Stat: [Statistical] Account.
The parish is bounded on the North by the parishes of Kinnell & Lunan; on the West by the parishes of Kirkden & Carmyllie;
on the South by the parish of St.Vigians; And on the East by the German Ocean.
The Lunan Water flows eastward through this parish, and falls into Lunan Bay in the N.E [North East] Corner of the parish. The Scottish North Eastern Railway (Arbroath Branch)

passes through the Western extremity of this parish.
The extent of the sea coast is about 5 miles: of which that along the bay of Lunan (which affords a safe anchorage for ships, except in a storm from the east) is flat & sandy, & overgrown with bent; but the coast on the South, is high & rocky, where there is a remarkable promontory, the Red Head (plan 41-14). This Cape is 45 fathoms in height. It is seen at a great distance from the Sea & abounds with a variety of Sea-fowls. At the Red Head there is an inexhaustible quarry of fine free-stone; & below the rocks, pebbles known by the name of Scots pebbles are numerous: among which there are some of the colour & density of an Amethyst.
There is no portion of this parish detached, nor any portion of any other parish, contained within the boundary of this parish. |

The Manse
Inverkeillor
2d May 1862
Dear Sir,
In regard to the spelling
of the name of this parish, there
can be no doubt the double "l" is
a very modern innovation - Our
Kirk Session Records are all in
the custody of the Registrar General
at present but I have all the Pres-
bytery Records beside me and
their authority as to usage is
perhaps of greater value. I have
before a Minute of Presbytery of
date 1836, in which Inverkeilor
is the spelling. On the tombstone
of the Revd [Reverend] Alexander Carnegie who died
in 1836 he is styled Minister of

Inverkeilor. In my presentation
by the Crown in 1843 the spelling is
the same viz with one "l". To this
day a venerable Clergyman in a
neighbouring parish, now in his 83d
year, always spells it with one "l".
So, there can be no doubt that until
within these last 25 years Inverkeilor
seems to have been the universally
adopted spelling.
How the modern spelling came
into fashion I know not. On my
coming here 19 years ago, it was
the usual local spelling adopted
and I knowing no other at the time
naturally fell into it
The very ancient spelling as it
occurs in the Chartularies is various
Inverkileder, Inverkilether, Inverkeleder
[right hand of page]
This is all the information I can
give you on the Subject. I suspect
it is enough to condemn the present
usage as a mere modern innovation
I am
Dear Sir
Yours truly

The walls are about 5 feet in thickness. The age of the old mansion house is not known but is believed to be very ancient. It was removed with this exception about 3 years ago, when the new house was built. The old statistical account mentions this place as being a Royal hunting seat of William the Lion. "Kinblythmont is a contraction of King's-blythe-mount."

The ruins of a Castle situated on an eminence, partly artificial, falling to Lunan Water. The most perfect part remaining is the North end of the quadrangle which rises to about 50 feet in height, and the other walls vary from 10 to 50 feet by portions having fallen down at various places. The walls are about 6 feet in thickness.
"On an eminence at the mouth of Lunan Water stands a venerable ruin, called Red Castle. Chalmers in his Caledonia ascribes the erection of it to Walter de Berkeley, called the Lord of Red Castle, in the reign of William the Lion. But tradition asserts it to have been built by King William himself and to have been used as a royal hunting seat, and it seems to be aided in its verdict by the names of some localities in the neighbourhood," &c. &c.

This bay extends in this parish from Ethie Haven, northward to the parish boundary. It then extends along the whole coast lines of Lunan, Maryton detached, and part of Craig.
" A beautiful semicircular indentation of the German Ocean, 5 miles in extent of Coast line...... Its coast for a mile at each extremity is bold and rocky... and over the intermediate 3 miles, in the middle of which enters Lunan Water, it is a low sandy beach, slightly chequered with small stones, and regularly flanked with bent coverd knolls....... The bay has a fine sandy bottom and affords safe anchorage in any storm except from the North east and east."

William Farrier, Farmer, Lunan Bay |

A remarkable eminence near the sea. The extreme top of the knoll still remains in its original state, but the ground having been cut away round about it when undergoing cultivation, has considerably changed its former appearance. While undergoing the improvements mentioned, a very large quantity of bones were found at various places, some of them even skulls, in almost complete state of preservation. They were enclosed within stone slabs, covered by large piles of stone with earth above. A raven - scottice, a Corbie - was the Danish ensign.

[Note]
"At the influx of the Lunan into the German Ocean, stand
the ancient ruins of Redcastle. Its dimensions are small,
its walls thick & compactly built & surrounded by a strong
rampart of considerable height. As this Castle is situated
almost in the centre, & commands the whole of the bay
of Lunan, it has naturally been supposed that King
William had built it to prevent the incursions of the Danes
who frequently landed in the bay; & an artificial mound
of earth on the West side of the bay, called "the Corbies Knowe"
has been conjectured to have been the place where the sacred
ensign of the Danes, distinguished by the Emblem of a Raven
(Scottice, Corbie,) was stationed; or it may have superseded
a Danish fort, for the eminence in question bears evident
marks of having been a fort long previous to the erection
of the Castle. Another tradition is, that it had been one of
the King's hunting seats. It might have been both. All however
agree tha t it was a royal residence. And this tradition
is fully borne out not only by several Charters from that monarch
in which one Berkley, a favourite of William & who designates
himself Lord Redcastle, subscribes as a witness, but also by the
names of many of the surrounding places." New Stat: [Statistical] Account |

"A promontory, or bold abutting headland, on the South side of Lunan Bay, Parish of Inverkeilor. It decends almost sheer down, in precipitous rock to the sea of 270 feet; and it is but a nodular projection of a stretch, several miles in extent, of bold, rocky, and high Coast........ The headland abounds with various species of sea fowls, it makes a fine display of the porphyritic formation of rock, it is distinctly seen at a great distance at sea, and is remarkable as the point northward which, before the year 1793, coal was not permitted to be carried without paying a very heavy duty."
