041 The ruins of a Castle situated on an eminence, partly artificial, falling to Lunan Water. The most perfect part remaining is the North end of the quadrangle which rises to about 50 feet in height, and the other walls vary from 10 to 50 feet by portions having fallen down at various places. The walls are about 6 feet in thickness.
"On an eminence at the mouth of Lunan Water stands a venerable ruin, called Red Castle. Chalmers in his Caledonia ascribes the erection of it to Walter de Berkeley, called the Lord of Red Castle, in the reign of William the Lion. But tradition asserts it to have been built by King William himself and to have been used as a royal hunting seat, and it seems to be aided in its verdict by the names of some localities in the neighbourhood," &c. &c.
