039 | [Situation] At the South of Parish. A very ancient building with various modern improvements which is supposed to have been commenced in the 16th Century by Sir Alexander Guthrie. It consists of a strong high tower, surmounted at the S.E. [South East] corner with a smaller one, called the Keeper's Tower, the walls are ten feet thick & are built of a kind of Red Sandstone; the additions to the Old Tower, have a modern appearance & add greatly to its beauty, the grounds are very tastefully laid out, and are at the present time being greatly improved. |
