Supposed Site of Battle - Continued. "There is no account of any remarkable battle within the parish. There was a small skirmish upon the Ferry Hills, between the Scots and English in Oliver Cromwells time. The great and severe engagement upon the following day, which was maintained with so much obstinacy and slaughter on both sides, and terminated in the defeat of the Scots, was indeed begun near this town, upon a place called Hillfield; but the Scots retreating, it was chiefly fought upon the opposite bank of Masterton, which though not far distant, lies in the parish of Dunfermline" Old Stat. [Quotation]
"Situated upon a small rock, connected by a causeway with the Mainland, stands the Castle of Rosyth, It is a ruinous square tower, forming the northeast angle of what must have been a pretty large building. Over the gateway is a mouldered armorial bearing, surmounted by a Crown, and M.R. 1561. On the stone bars of the great windows of the hall, which are evidently much more recent than the original loop - holes "F*S" and "M.N" "Anno 1639". There appear to be the remains of a four gun battery on the side of the rock next to the sea. This Castle is said by Sir Robert Sibbald to have been the seat of Stewart of Rosyth or Durisdeer, a descendent of James Stewart brother to Walter, the great Steward of Scotland, and father of Robert II. There is tradition that the Mother of Oliver - Cromwell was born in it, and that the Protector visited it when he commanded the Army in Scotland. " New Stat. Acct.
