OS1/13/69/31 CAIRN [Carmore] Cairn Cairn Cairn Cairn Cairn Mr. Walsh Alexander Martin Alexander Campbell Mr. Peter Bruce Mr. McDonald 015 [situation] 2 Miles N.E. [Northeast] of Netherton. The object which bears this name is a rough furzy Knowe on the South side of a prominent hill on the farm of Carmore, the opinions of the old inhabitants generally agree in making this object a place of interment and connected with some early traditionary battle, in proof of which it is reported that human bones have been found in and about it but I have been unable to meet with any living witness whom found or seen objects reported to have been found there. The late Mr. Small gives an account of two Forts being erected in this locality one on the lands of Carmore and the other on the lands of Drunzie, but it is doubtful whether the Cairn described above has any reference to the Carmore Fort [continued centre page] for this reason, that it is on the side [underlined] of the hill the summit of which in all probability would have been the position chosen so as to have a view of and guard the surrounding country; immediately north of this cairn on the summit of the hill which is now planted is a quarry wherein (bones) (humans swords etc. have been found when quarrying: this is probably the spot described by Mr. Small which is favourable from its local commanding position..turn over
OS1/13/69/31 31 Plan 15D Trace 4 [Note - Cairn] in Old English [Typeface] [Quotation] Page 179 Smalls antiquities. "We find [trace] of these forts in the pass above Burnside. On of them is on the east side on the farm of Carmore, built on a beautiful round hill raised into a top, commanding a full view of the road all the way from the Gullet Bridge and a great part of the hollow of Fife to the eastward. It had been upon a pretty large scale, as its name imports, Caermore. the great Fort but unfortunately the plough has also found its way up to it. The men when removing the large stones found some burnt bones and about two dozen of pretty clear blackish beads, some of them resembling those found at Pitlochie" [Margin Note - arrowed to above] Showing the object to have been a Cairn not a fort. J.K. Capt. R.E. [Captain, Royal Engineers]
OS1/13/69/31 Although the narrative ends with "Turn over" there is no other note to be seen in this volume.
OS1/13/69/33 FORT [Drunzie] Fort (site of Supposed) Smalls Antiquities 015 [situation] About 1 1/8 Miles N.E. [Northeast] of Netherton. The place on the east side of Drunzie farmhouse supposed by Mr. Small to have been a Fort, is an elevated piece of ground where the Trig [Trigonometrical] Station is represents the site of the Fort if ever one was erected, from the appearance of the ground and the nature of the hollow between it and Carmore the Antiquarian would probably from reading Smalls work come to the conclusion of the identity of such structures. Save Mr. Small there are no parties whom I have consulted that can honestly [apeit] the existence of a Fort or Cairn ever being in or about Drunzie [Note] nor do I believe there ever was one here. [signed] J.B. Capt. R.E [Captain, Royal Engineers]
OS1/13/69/33 33 [No Header] [Deletion] Fort [signed] J.B. Capt. R.E. [Probably John Bayly Captain, Royal Engineers] [Note - arrowed to the words "the raised place" and "artificial" in Remarks] Shows the site not to rest entirely on conjecture - but whether a Cairn - Fort or dwelling is doubtful. [Note] Site of Supposed Fort or Cairn - not Supposed Site of Fort or Cairn, o,m,o. [Quotation] Page 180 Smalls Antiquities. " The other fort is down in the hollow to the westward on the farm of Drunzie, Drunky or Drungy as it is usually called. This had been obviously the original name given by the inhabitants to the fort, as it is close by the farm house upon a steep base to the eastward, and overlooking the narrow pass on the road that had at that period gone up between the Fort and the little hamlet called Carmore Burn." [Pencilled Note at Foot of Page] I have written the name on the trace but if the Capt [Captain] decides against it it can be easily erased. J.M.
OS1/13/69/33 The arguments regarding the contents of "Smalls Antiquities" is found in many volumes of the Fife O.S. records.

Anderson of "Luscar" to his Factor Mr. Sang of Kirkcaldy regarding changing a name of a property] Luscar 9th May 1854 My dear Sir, I quite agree with you in all you say about the absurd name of "Goukhall" I think it likely to be a corruption of some old Gaelic words, as so many of our Fife names originate in that language. It would be highly desirable to have it changed. I have communicated with all the Feuars (with the exception of.... [continued p 36]

Camps is a different property, being itself a feu off Carnock estate. The whole of Goukhall is feued from Clune, and it seems to me were the name changed to Clune-hall, it would be appropriate & very soon come into general use. You mention an application to Capt. [Captain] Baillie, but as I am unknown to that officer, and his address is unknown to me, if you would kindly apply to know if it can be done, or what formality may be required to warrant Capt. B. [Captain Bayly] in doing it, I would gladly attend to it, in order to serve the villagers. Sir Thomas Buchan Hepburn is proprietor of Clune, and if his consent be requisite I think it could be easily got. As the feus I hold are quite detached from the villages and... [continued page 37]
