"The castle of Lindores remained long the residence of the descendants of Sir James but after the erection of the house of Nether Rankeilour, it was allowed to go to ruin. It is supposed it was to this castle of Lindores, as we are told by Harry the minstrel, that Wallace retired
with his followers, after the battle of Black Earnside ; or it may have been to the still more ancient castle, the vestiges of which are to be traced near the village of Lindores, which belonged to the earls of Fife. We are informed by the annals of Ulster, that a battle was fought at Lindores in 621 while Cineoch, the son of Luthrin, was king of the Picts." Leighton's Hist. [History] of Fife Vol, II p. 150 [Volume 2 page 150]
