– This parish formerly was divided into two chapelries, which were subordinate to the church of Dunbar, the chapel of Whittingham served the lower district and that of Penchiels, the Lammermuirs. Penchiel Chapel stood a little below the tower of that name, in a glen, which is still Called Chapel-haugh. Whittingham is in the Presbytery of Dunbar, and Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. Patron Mr Balfour of Whittingham House. Stipend £266.12.1 Glebe £18. The parochial school is the only Seminary in the parish The Master of which has the maximum salary of £34.4.4 and his school fees may amount to £27. He has also £14 from other sources. The average number of Scholars are 75, –
