024 Two small Knowes detached near to Lochwood Castle. They are supposed to have been used for the purpose of watching in ancient times when the English made their attacks on the Scotch. in 1593 Sir James Johnstone proprietor of Lochwood Castle killed Lord Maxwell at the Battle of Dryfe Sands, perhaps they were used for watching then. They are merely called Watch Knowes in the district. etc etc
