MOAT [Shancastle] Camp Robert McTurk Esq
William Hyslop
James Todd
030 A large circular mound having traces of entrenchments, it is supposed to have been a Camp, but whether British or Roman cannot be ascertained. It was close to the public road about 1/4 of a mile West of Maxwelton.
The above has every appearance of a Moat. The entrenchments so called, do not present that appearance usually attributed to such but these features are characteristic of walks or promenades cut down evidently subsequent to the raising of this mound, and are not hollowed or scooped out but quite flat on the surface. During the 14 or 15th Century the Earls of Glencairn Barons of the district are reputed to have had castle somewhere near this which may be confirmation of this Antiquity's connection therewith either as a judicial moat or other outpost. This characteristic of other Mounds called Moats in this County
