John McCormick an intelligent man a native of Dumfries & remarkable for his knowledge of the traditions of the neighbourhood relates the following as the true tradition concerning Maidenbower Craig. A young & beautiful woman of Dumfries attracted the notice of a great & powerful feudal Lord & he having unprincipled used every endeavour to seduce her, She to escape his treachery retired from her home & concealed herself in the above rock untill She died there; after which yearly on the anniversary of her death the maidens of Dumfries were wont to assemble here. dressed in white to commemorate the event of her death & Strew the place with flowers. It subsequently became a test of virginity for a young woman to pass the opening between the rocks which leads into the recess where tradition records the young woman died. (over)
