053 [Situation] To the N.E. [North East] of Gilknockie Bridge.
This name is applied to the remains of a deep ditch thrown across a peninsula formed by the River Esk, at the east end of Gilknockie Bridge. It is said to have been constructed by Johnnie Armstrong of Gilknockie. It appears to have been a strong position, being protected by the ditch on the east side, and by the steep banks of the river on the north south & west sides.
