OS1/3/46/1 MAYBOLE [parish] Maybole Maybole Maybole Maybole Johnston's County Map Statistical Account County Voters' List Patterson's History of Ayrshire (1847) 032 ; 033 ; 038 ; 039 ; 044 ; 045 There are various suppositions respecting the derivation of this name. According to Chalmers in his Caledonia it is of Anglo-Saxon derivation the earliest notice of it being found in a charter of Henry III in Hearnes Liber Niger viz "in 1192, Duncan, son of Gilbert di Galiveia, gave to God and St Mary, of Maelros a certain piece of land in Carric, named Maybothel" - 'Bottle' a house or village 'May' the name of some individual or 'Maey' a kinsman or cousin". Others are of the opinion that the name is of Celtic derivation, from the fact of old people usually calling it Minniebole; and from it being in the old records and papers written Minnyboil or Maiboil: It would thus signify 'the heath ground upon the marsh or meadow'. Others in support of another Gaelic interpretation offer this:- Maigh (the gh being silent) a plain, and Buile a fold; Moni, small hills; and as the fold in old times consisted of wooden [flakes], removed from one spot to another to answer the grazing & manuring of the land, sometimes the fold or stall would be on the plain, occasioning the term Maighbuile [underlined], at other times upon the more elevated ground occasioning Monibuile [underlined]. The parish contains (according to the Statistical account) about thirty-four square miles; its greatest length being nine and its greatest breadth five miles, taken in the common way from the county map, and which is probably far from being accurate. That which appears to have been the principal part of the building and next the Sea is on a Solid rock about 20 feet high, the wall of the Castle appearing like a Continuation of the rock itself. From the bottom of the rock towards the high water mark is a steep grassy Slope of an angle of about 45°, The whole height from the H.W. [High Water] line to the foundation of the Castle being about forty feet. The outer walls are about four feet thick and not more than ten feet in height except the N.W. [North West] and which is about thirty, and in Such a ruinous State that no mark is left indicative of its former height. The interior is a heap of rubbish Consisting of half Calcined Stones, fragments of broken arches etc. " From the Style of the building having an eye to Safety more than ornament - Dunure may be regarded as one of those Strongholds Supposed to have been built by the Vikings. Indeed the author of the 'History of the Kennedy's attributes the building of the castle to the Danes". Pattersons History of Ayrshire.
OS1/3/46/35 [Page] 35 -- Sheet 38,6 -- Parish of Maybole "The author of the 'Historie of the Kennedyis 'attritubites the building of the castle to "the Danes. He says - 'The Black Book of Scone sets their [The Kennedies] beginning "to be in the reign of King Malcolm the second, who was crowned in the year of God 1010 "years, and was the fourscore King of Scotland. There was with the King one Mr Kennane of "the Isles, who bruickis the lands of Stroworddell to this hour. This McKennane of the Isles' "succession was at the time of King Donald's reign, when the Danes got possession of the whole "Isles, banished by them into Ireland, where he remained to the reign of King Alexander the "Third, and then came to King Alexander before the battle of Largs, with three score of his name "and servants', and after that KingAcho was defeated, he fled to Ayr, & there took shipping. "The principal man that pursued him was McKenane, with his two sons, and after that the "King of Danes was received in the Castle of Ayr, McKenane followed on a Lord or great Captain "of the Danes, to a crag in Carrick, whereon there was a strength built by the Danes, low "by the sea side, the which strength McKenane & his sons took, & slew the Captain & all "that was therein. For the deed which, this McKenane got the same strength from King "Alexander, with certain lands lying thereto, the which he gave to his second son, & there was " the first beginning of the name of Kennedy in the main land.On the strength & crag "there is now a fair castle, which the chiefs of the lowland Kennedies took their style of " for a long space, and was called lairds of Dunure, because of the Don of the hill "above that house (In gaelic the name signifies the hill or part of the yew tree). "This account of the origin of the Kennedies, & their acquisition of Dunure, is unquestionably "fabulous. *** Here in the 'Black vout' (vault) the Abbot of Crossraguel, Allan Stuart, "was subjected to a process of compulsion peculearly illustrative of the insecure state of society "at the time. The roasting of the Abbot' as the circumstance was designated, took place "on the 1st & 7th September 1570," Pattersons Hist [History] of Ayrshire (1847)

Menzies W Rennie William Brown Johnston's County Map 038 The ruins of an old castle supposed to have belonged to the middle of the 17th Seventeenth century but no authentic information can be obtained as to the exact date of its erection. The walls are still good, but have a very blackened appearance. - They are about twenty feet in height, and are of an immense thickness, but there is nothing of the inside work remains except a small portion of the slaincale and loose pasmeals of partitions which have seperated one apartment from the other.
OS1/3/46/40 [Page] 40 -- Parish of Maybole "Dunduffe still exists in its unfinished state. It had been "designed, apparently, to form an oblong square tower of considerable " magnitude. The walls are as high as the second story, which " seems to have been intended for the dining-room. The windows are " large and the apartment has , even in its unfinished and ruinous state, "a light and pleasant appearance. The site of the castle, on the range of " hills not far from Dunure, commands a beautiful prospect. The ruins "do not seem older than the seventeenth century." Patterson's History of Ayrshire (1847)
OS1/3/46/41 KIRKBRIDE (Ruins of) Kilbride Kirkbride W. Menzies J. G. Hannay W Rennie William Brown Johnston's County Maps 038 The remains of an old Church or Chapel on the farm of Dunduff, with a Burying pound attached and Still used. There is a Small portion of the walls standing about ten feet high but the Greater part of it is nearly level with the ground. No information Can be obtained when it was erected or whether it may have been a Parish Church, but it is very probable it has been a 'Chapel of Ease' in connection with the Collegiate Church of Maybole.
OS1/3/46/41 Parish of Maybole - - [Page] 41 "The ruins of several religious houses are still to be traced in "different parts of the parish. The walls if the church of Kirkbride "on the farm of Dunduff are distinct, the surrounding burying ground " is still used, and an adjoining field bears the name of the Priest's " Land. At Auchendrane and elsewhere, the number of similar erections " were visible when Abercrombie wrote his Journal. Kirkbride has generally " been considered as a parish united to Maybole, but being unable to "find any notice of the union, I am rather inclined to think that " it and the other ruins refer to the chapels attached to the "Collegiate Church of Maybole." - Statistical Account (1842). "Even the church of Kirkbride seems to have existed previously "at all events contemporaneously with that of Maybole, both of which "were granted by Earl Duncan to the Cistertian monnery of North Berwick "the latter in 1216. This grant was confirmed by Neil, the son of " Duncan of Carrick *** The Parish of Kirkbride, which was "dedicated to St. Brigide, also continued in the hands of the Nuns "of North Berwick till the Reformation. It stood on the " sea-coast.

It does not appear at what time the junction of "the two parishes occurred, but it must have been prior to " 1597, in December of which year the church of Maybole "was finally separated from the Convent of North Berwick, "and established as a rectory by act of parliament." OS1/3/46/67 NEWARK CASTLE Newark Castle Newark Castle Newark Castle Site of Fort J.G.Hannay Alexander Henderson Rev'd [Reverend] William Menzies 039 This Castle, property of the Marquis of Ailsa, is built upon a rock. The original building was a single square tower, date of erection uncertain. It has since been much improved & enlarged principally in 1687 and eight years ago. It is now a small elegant quad-rangular building four stories high. There is an old Spanish Chestnut tree about a hundred yards from the house believed to be the finest in Scotland - 16 feet in girth. A large old ash - named the Dule tree stands near the Grand stair of the Castle. About eight years ago the remains of an encampment were still traceable on one of the higher ridges near the Castle. The breastworks unusually extensive, ran in parallel lines along the heights, the space between varying from fifty to one hundred yards, according to the form of eminence. Origin unknown, but is sometimes supposed to have been Norwegian.
OS1/3/46/67 [Page] 67 -- Parish of Maybole Newark Castle - Johnston's County Map "Newark Castle is still in a habitable condition, though the feudal pomp "of former times has long departed from it.***The castle, originally a single "square tower, in the style of those places of strength which began to spring up "throughout the country in the eleventh century, is built on a rock, rising " gently above the surrounding surface, but at the sametime affording ample "means of defence, according to the system of warfare which then prevailed. "It was surrounded by a moat - only recently filled up - with a drawbridge; "and a small streamlet, which now winds past the knoll, supplied " the fosse with water. The tower, including the arched keep, consists of four " stories, and was ascended, prior to the improvements subsequently made "by an inside spiral stair of very narrow dimensions. The entrance from "the drawbridge appears, in older times, to have been through "a portion of the rock. Of the age or history of the building, " few particulars, we believe, are extant" Patterson's History of Ayrshire (1847)

[South East] from this are narrow, Steep, and irregular, and the houses generally one Storey. The old burying ground is Situated in the S.E. [South East] part of the town & is enclosed by a Stone wall Six feet high. The old Ph. [Parish] Church stood about the Centre of it. [Continued over]

"The derivation of the name of the town & parish of Maybole in the former Statistical account, from Maybole, must be regarded as purely fanciful. Chalmers, in his Caledonia, says, that the earliest notice of the name is in a Charter of Henry III in Hearne's Liber Niger Viz. in '1192, Duncan, the son of Gilbert di Galineia, gave to God & St. Mary, of Maelros a Certain piece of land in Carrick, named Maybothel', and he suggests in Ansegeum an Anglo-Saxon derivation."
