OS1/3/39/1 KIRKOSWALD [parish] Kirkoswald Kirkoswald Kirkoswald Kirkoswald Pattersons Hist [History] of Ayrshire Statistical Account (1842) Voters List Johnston's County Map 043 ; 040 ; 045 ; 049 ; 050 ; 051 This parish takes it's name from Oswald, a Northumbrian King of the Heptarchy who built a church on the site of the burying grounds be- side the village - in gratitude, it is said, for a victory he had there obtained. The surface of the parish is hilly, but with one or two exceptions not mountainous, and abounding in rich green pasture. There is little or no natural wood in the Parish; but the want of this is happily supplied by the plantations made by the Earl of Cassillis & Sir Charles Ferguson of Kilkerran. Upon a small promontory on the barony of Turnberry, now the property of the Earl of Cassillis, are the ruins of the famous castle of Turnberry - birthplace of King Robert Bruce. The next remarkable old building in the parish, is the Abbey of Crossraguel, founded by Duncan King of Scotland in 1260. It is more entire than any Abbey in the west of Scotland. The next old building in the Ph [Parish] is the house or Castle of Thomaston. Tradition tells us that it was built by a nephew of Robert Bruce in 1335. Of the more modern buildings the most remarkable is Culzean Castle founded by David, late Earl of Cassillis in the year 1777 * It occupies the site of one of the most admired residences on the coast. The style of the building is singularly elegant. Baltersan is the name of another old building in the Ph. [Parish] Mentioned by Abercrummie. The Ph. [Parish] can boast of one of those Somewhat rare remains of former times - a vitrified fort. It is situated on the shore. Mention is made in the Old Stat [Statistical] Account of two large hillocks that had existed from time immemorial, and were accidentally discovered to consist of a substance which resembled coal-ashes, and which was found to be good manure for some purposes. It has been supposed that they are the effects of Barbarous Superstition in times of idolatry in this country. In the interior of the parish there are distinct traces of a druidical circle. The most-Western cove has its entrance 20 feet above the base of the cliff and consists of two openings connected by a small door way built of stone & lime, each of these openings are 55 feet in length by 30 feet in breadth. The roof of the inner recess is 20 feet high & slopes [gradually] towards the sides and furthest extremity where it- joins the floor. The roof of the outer opening is 30 feet high, A narrow passage 30 feet in length leads from this recess into another huge cove 110 feet-long and 13 feet broad the roof is 30 feet high and has a very irregular appearance. The mouth of this cove which has been very large and nearly level with the water mark, is built-up with a stone & lime wall & formed with several small windows, A small stone couch extends from this wall 8 feet inwards and is built over a spring of good water. Tradition reports these coves to have been the hiding place of Sir Archibald Kennedy of Culzean, (a persecutor of the Covenanters) after the Reformation. Towards the East is the largest Cove which has two entrances, (as low as high water mark) forming as acute angles. it extends inwards 220 feet- and varies from 30 to 15 feet in breadth. the greatest height - of the roof is 40 feet, above the angle of the [entrance] it then lessens gradually towards the furthest extremity where it joins the floor.
OS1/3/39/5 Sheet 44.2 -- Parish of Kirkoswald -- [Page] 5 [Note] "The Coves of Culzean, referred to by Abercrummie, have long been famed in fairy tradition, and are considered curious as objects of nature. The outer cove, which enters at low water mark, is about fifty feet high in the roof, and nearly two hundred feet long, extending inwards. The other two are considerably less, but of the same irregular form. There are other three coves, towards the east, which also communicate with each other. They are nearly of the same height and form as the other. It is popularly believed that these coves extend an unknown distance into the interior; and in corroboration of this, it is said that a piper, who had lost his way amongst them, was heard playing several miles from the sea! OS1/3/39/27 BALTERSAN CASTLE Baltersan Castle Baltersan Castle Baltersan Castle Baltersan Castle Alexander McCaw J Findlay Thomas Oliver Johnston's County Map 044 Erected in the year 1584 by a John Kennedy who lived at Pennyglen. The Main building is about 50 feet by 26, its length, lying Nearly E.&W. [East & West] The walls which are in a tolerable State of preservation, & about 4 feet thick, rise to a height of 3 Storey or about 30 feet. The interior is a heap of rubbish, at least to a height of 6 feet. on the N.E. [North East] corner it is flanked by a tower Square outside & Circular inside and having a winding Staircase which Communicated with the upper part of the building.
OS1/3/39/27 No. 21 Sheet 44.8 -- Parish of Kirkoswald -- [Page] 27 "Though the Statist is silent in reference to this old building, "it nevertheless claims the attention of the topographer. It is "within view of Crossraguel Abbey. The walls are still pretty "entire, but it has long been roofless, and the orchards, gardens, "parks and woods have given place to corn and pasture fields. A few "solitary trees sympathize with it in its decay. It bears evidence, "however, of having been at one time a good house. *** The first "of the Kennedies of Baltersan mentioned in the "Historical Account" "of the Ailsa family, is Major Thomas Kennedy, who lived about the middle "of the seventeenth century. It had been long previously, however, in "possession of a family of the name of Kennedy, no doubt a branch of the "main stock. The first occupier, apparently, was James Kennedy, second "son of Gilbert, first Lord Kennedy, afterwards designed of Row. He is "mentioned in a charter dated 14th May 1473 ** It would thus "appear that Baltersan belonged at the time to the Abbey of Crossraguel, "and that the manor-house or place of Baltersan was not then in existence "The building of this baronial residence was probably the work of the "next possessor, John Kennedy of Beltersane who also possessed the barony "of Greenan - the old tower of which stands upon a rock overhanging the "sea, at the Doonfoot, near Ayr. He had a dispute with the Magistrates of Ayr "in 1591" Patterson's History of Ayrshire (1847)

OS1/3/39/41 TURNBERRY CASTLE (Ruins of) Turnberry Castle Turnberry Castle Turnberry Castle Turnberry Castle Alexander McGaw J Findlay Thomas Oliver David Fulton 043 The ruins of an ancient Castle, belonging to the Earls of Carrick & probably erected by them, as their principal stronghold in that district the date of its erection is now unknown It stands on a rocky shore, about 300 yards N.E. [North East] of the angle, turning towards Girvan. The walls on the sea-side are built around a rocky cliff & 4 feet in thicKness. Those on the land side are 9 feet thick, they are nearly level with the ground, except a small portion out the most Northern point, which is 12 feet high Immediately East of this & over an opening in the rock an arch appears to have been constructed the abutments of which are still remaining. This is a passage which opens towards the sea. [Continued]
OS1/3/39/41 [Page] 41 -- Sheet 43.12 -- Parish of KirKoswald "The remains of this famous castle - consisting of little more than the foundation - "are assuredly the oldest remains in the parish of which any account can be given. They stand upon "a small promontory, running into the sea, in the barony of Turnberry. Abercrummie says, "the next (to Culzean) upon the coast, are to be seen the old ruines of the ancient Castle of "Turnberry, upon the north-west poynt of that rockie angle that turns about towards "Girvan, and is perhaps that place called by Ptoleme, Perigorium, of a Greek origination, "importing round the corner, and suiting the English designation of Turnberry; and that it "cannot be Bargany, as some imagine, the very situation of that castle, and recentness of "it, will abundantly show; and to confirme this our conjecture, a tradition amongst the "people there, will not a little conduce, namely, that near to this very castle, there was of "old a toune of the same name, of which there is no vestige at present to be seen, but "that they perceive some remainders of a causeway; and the reason for this maybe, the "neighbourhood of the port of greatest resort in all that coast, at which the first possess- "ors landed from Ireland, and so might have fixed their habitation near to it, though "now the place be but a tract of narrow sands". "There is some probability in the con- "jecture of Abercrummie. That many of the strongholds of the Romans existed long after "their departure is well known, and not a few still exist in various quarters of Britain. "This however must remain a matter of dubiety. At all events the origin of the Castle "of Turnberry, cannot now be positively ascertained. It is evident, however, that "it was the residence of the McDowalls, Earls of Carrick. This may be inferred "from the grants of the Church of Turnberry, and from the erection of the Abbey "of Crossraguel, by Duncan Earl of Carrick; and it is certain that in 1271, Martha "Countess of Carrick lived at Turnberry & was in that year married to Robert Bruce " Earl."

OS1/3/39/42 [Page] 42 -- Sheet 43.12 -- Parish of KirKoswald Turnberry Castle Continued "Earl of Annandale. As the birth place of King Robert the Bruce, the "son of this marriage, Turnberry will be sacred to Scotsmen in all time. "It was here in this Castle, that the first recorded meeting of the Scottish nobles, "assembled for the purpose of supporting the title of the competitor Bruce to "the Crown, was held. This occurred on the 20th September 1286 *** Whether "Turnberry Castle had been built by William the Lion, as a means of subjecting "Galloway more thoroughly to his sway, or whether it was a still older strong- "hold, cannot be ascertained; but that it became the residence of Duncan, the "first Lord of Carrick, as a distinct possession, can scarcely be doubted, Duncan "was created Earl of Carrick soon after this arrangement; and as we have seen, "founded the Abbey of Crossraguel in 1244."
