Hamilton Town Clerk Mr. James Hamilton 018 Was Built in 1775 by Denomination Called 'Antiburghers' but the Congregation had So increased that it was found inadequate for their Accommodation, and it was therefore taken down and rebuilt on a larger Scale in 1807, it now Contains About 1000 sittings. The Congregation in 1843 adopted the name of the 'Evangelical Union' Commonly called Morisonians, to which persuasion they Still adhere, there is no permanent minister Attached to this Church, at the present time. but the Congregation are principally supplied with Students from the Academy or Theological Seminary at Greenock, which is Connected with the Union, who Officiate; It is very plain, but Substantial Structure, and is rather unpleasantly Situated, on account of the many Old tenements with which it is Surrounded, it is Supported Solely by the Congregation. -

Hamilton Town Clerk Mr. James Hamilton 018 This is a neat piece of Workmanship which Stands in the Centre of the Cross, it is Composed of White Marble, and Stands on a Pedestal of the Same material, The Monument & Pedestal are About 16 feet in height, The Situation, where it is erected was judiciously Chosen, and where it has a noble effect. Was erected in 1848 to the Memory of the late Sir James Shaw Bart. [Baronet] who was a native of this place, by public Subscriptions Chiefly Amongst the Magistrates Town Council and inhabitants of Kilmarnock, he is represented in the Costume of Lord Mayor of London, which Office he held, holding in his right hand the Warrant of Precedence, which it is Said he established during his Mayoralty, a Privilege which in Virtue of his Office, The Lord Mayor of London enjoys and taking the lead of all Public Processions in the City, And however exalted in birth or Station, none Save the Sovereign has a right to proceed him on these Occasions, this prerogative it is Said had fallen into disuse till Sir James re-established it at the funeral of the immortal Lord Nelson , where he took Precedence of the Prince of Wales and his Brothers, but conspicuously gave Way to His Royal Highness on entering the the Cathedral of Saint Paul's.-

OS1/3/35/13 [Page] 13 TOWN OF KILMARNOCK ** " Kilmarnock although familiar with the " barbarities of the Persecutors, had as yet " beheld nor Martyr executed within its Boundaries, and it was therefore "resolved by the enemies of the Covenant, that Mr. Nisbit should be hanged " at The Cross, in Order that the inhabitants and those in the Neighbourhood " might be Awed into Submission by the dreadful Spectacle .* * * " In the 14th April 1683, he was launched into eternity, when earnestly "Commending his Soul to the Care of his Heavenly Father; The Spot where " the Gallows Stood is Still marked by his Initials of his name, formed " With White Stones, at the South Corner of the Cross, and in the " Low Church Burial Ground is a Stone to his Memory, on which " is this inscription._ " Here lies John Nisbit, who was taken by Major "Balfour's Party, and Suffered at Kilmarnock 14th April 1683, "for adhering to the Words of God and Our Covenants." The Old People of the neighbourhood have a kind of tradition, respecting this field, which Would readily Suggest the name, they Say that it formerly belonged to an Old Gentleman of the town who Spent a considerable Portion of his lifetime in the Island of Barbadoes, and that he bequeathed it to the females of the Burgh to be Appropriated as a Bleaching Green, but Was Wrested from them at a Subsequent period.
