133 The County town of Argyllshire stands at the lower end of a small bay, where the River Aray falls into Loch Fine. It was erected into a royal burgh in 1648 by Charles I while he was a prisoner in Carisbrook Castle & has been for a long period the principal seat of the Argyll family and is an important station for the prosecution of the herring fishery. It joins with Ayr, Irvine, Campbelton & Oban in returning one Member to Parliament. Is governed by a Provost, 2 Bailies & 9 Councillors, is well lighted with Gas & has an ample supply of Water. Markets are held in May, July and October.
There are two leading thoroughfares already mentioned, two Hotels, several public houses and a Post Office which is situated on West side of Main Street.
