Peterhead Almanac & Buchan Directory 1865

Mr. James Paul Burnside
023 These extensive polishing works were established about 1860-61 and embraced all the work from the rough state, as the stones are delivered from the Quarries untill the elegant and highly finished polish is executed. Employing upwards of sixty men, and having their works fitted with exquisite and powerful machinery (driven by Steam power) they are qualified on the shortest notice, to execute the most extensive orders. From the fact that their works are situated near to their own Quarries, in the very heart of the Granite Country they can offer advantages, both as regards choice of Stone, and size of blocks, which few Companies in their line can afford. Specimens of the work executed at the "Peterhead Granite Works" may be seen throughout the District of Buchan, and in various parts of Aberdeenshire, in the pillars and pillasters of the New India House, the Foreign office, and the City Club in London Abney Park, Kensal Green etc. and various parts of America, Australia, New Zealand etc. Plain and Ornamental polished Granite in Red and Blue, always on hand. A Woollen Mill formerly stood here. John McGlashan & Co. [Company] proprietors.
