Comrie Colliery, sunk 1936-40 by the Fife Coal Co. Brick and concrete buildings and 2 headframes of conventional type. J R Hume 1976. There is evidence of extensive mineral extraction between Bickramside and Shepherlands farmsteadings. Depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife & Kinross, 1856, sheet 34), as a group of coal and ironstone mines, by the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map, (Fifeshire, 1896, sheet xxxiii SW), they were simply a collection of small coal mines, and after many amalgamations became in its final stage, Comrie Colliery, a modern coal mine which closed in c1983 after being used as a sattelite for the Longannet complex. (Cleish91 35-8, 40-2, 476-9, 480-9, 491, 493-5) Visited by RCAHMS (SH) 22 October 1991. NT 006 910 (centre) An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of a derelict site reclamation scheme. The evaluation consisted of a programme of test pitting, trial trenching and geophysical survey. A total of 50 hand-excavated test pits and 2m trial trenches were excavated in order to locate archaeological features and to assess the artefactual content of the topsoil. Only occasional modern drainage features were located within the excavated test pits and no artefacts were found within the topsoil. Geophysical (resistivity) survey of eight 30 x 30m grids was conducted but only geological anomalies were noted. No archaeological features were located. Full details will be lodged with the NMRS and Fife SMR. Sponsor: Land Regeneration and Development. A R Rees 1999.
