ABBEY [parish]Abbey Parish Abbey Parish Abbey Parish Abbey Parish Abbey Parish Abbey Parish Abbey ParishOld Statistical Account New Statistical Account Chalmers Caledonia Fullarton's Gazetteer Sheriff's Returns County Directory Origines Parochiales Scotiae"The Abbey of Paisley parish has been [so called] since 1736 to distinguish it from the Burgh of Paisley which was then separated from it and erected in to a distinct parish. Previous to this Separation the whole district was called the Parish of Paisley." "It is bounded on the north and north east by the parishes of Renfrew and Govan, in which direction it approaches within two miles of the Clyde, on the east by Eastwood, on the south by Neilston, on the west by Lochwinnoch and Kilbarchan. In point of extent this is the third parish in the county and, as regards value, by far the first. From north-east to south-west it stretches out nearly 9 miles in length. It is so indented on all sides by corners of adjoining parishes, that its breadth varies from half a mile to [5.5] miles." "It is generally of a gentle waving surface, frequently swelling, especially in the neighbourhood of Paisley, into beautiful little eminences." Extracted from "Chalmers' Caledonia", "Fullarton's Gazetteer" and "Old Statistical Account."Yes

Note "Near the west end of the Village of Elderslie and on South side of the turnpike road passing through it. A tenement of rather ancient appearance is pointed out as the house in which the renowned hero Sir William Wallace was born, but if this brave defender of his Country was born, as is generally allowed, on the spot it must have been a habitation of older date. Adjoining this house is an old garden, from the foundation of whose walls about thirty years ago a stone was dug, having the following inscription cut in Roman letters, "W.W.W. Christ is only my Redeemer" - This stone was taken to Elderslie house, the seat of Alexander Speirs Esqr. "Near Wallace's House", the name by which the above mentioned mansion is Known, but to the north side of the turnpike road stands the very celebrated tree called "Wallace's Oak." - New Stat [Statistical] Account.
